I’ve always wanted to write about food, but being a fairly picky eater (which I swear I’m working on) I was always a bit hesitant. However, I’ve found that I frequently have conversations with people about food; where to go, best spot to eat at, best cheap eats. So I figured, why not write about it? I mean this blog is an extension of who I am and everything that I love writing and talking about, so naturally food should be included! Whether it’s about awesome eats in and around Toronto or even recipes that I want to share with all of you, I thought the start of a new year would be a great time to bring in a new category to write about!
My first official food post is actually about a place I’ve heard about time and time again: Harlem Restaurant. There are actually two locations, Harlem Restaurant located on Richmond St. and Harlem Underground, located on Queen St West. After hearing about this spot for some time, I actually got to spend the last Sunday of 2013 at the Richmond St location.
It was a little quieter than I expected on a Sunday afternoon, but I tried to look at it like a private dining experience. I’ve heard so many great things about their chicken that it was a bit hard to choose! At the end, I chose their Southern Fried Chicken and my boyfriend chose their Jerked Smoked BBQ Chicken. We played it smart by choosing different dishes to try both. Let me tell you, Harlem’s chicken is (for lack of a better term) so good! The fried chicken was fried to perfection and although I’m not a fan of Mac-n-Cheese, I ordered it just to try it out. Again, it was delicious! It wasn’t too cheesy or too thick. And that’s coming from someone who isn’t exactly the biggest fan of Mac-n-Cheese!
His dish, the Jerk Smoked BBQ Chicken was also pretty good. Instead of the Mac-n-Cheese, he opted for their Coconut rice and peas. (Which I also had a taste of, ha.) Anyway, while we were both fairly satisfied with our dishes we regretted not getting their famous Southern Fried Chicken and Waffle dish. As we were leaving we passed by a group that ordered it and oh my, we couldn’t take our eyes off of it! If you’re a big fan of chicken and soul food, I definitely recommend Harlem. It’s a good place with good vibes and the food is amazing. My next order of business with Harlem is to try their Southern Fried Chicken and Waffle and yes, you can expect a post on that as well!
