To be honest with you, I love the museum and any chance I get to go there I take. But I remember hearing way back when about a weekly event happening at the Royal Ontario Museum. It was called Friday Night Live (not to be confused with Friday Night Lights). Every Friday the ROM celebrates a specific theme and has special guests, DJs, drinks, and amazing food, and best of all, you get to explore the museum in a new way!
The first FNL event of the season was actually on October 18 and was appropriately called, FASHION. This was a great way to kick off Toronto’s own fashion week! Of course, upon hearing the event, I immediately jumped at the chance to go.
The event itself runs from 7-11 or so, and a good tip I can offer is if you really want to go and see all the exhibits you should get advanced tickets. Thankfully, I purchased the tickets early and was able to go right in. Stepping into the museum after hours was like stepping into another world. Music was blasting, people were dressed in their best, and all the different lighting schemes gave the exhibits a ‘nightclub’ effect.
Since the theme was FASHION, of course everyone was dressed to impress! But best of all, there were up-and-coming designers from the Art of Fashion’s design competition. So it was great chatting with these designers about their work and inspirations. I even stayed to see the winners of the design competition and can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future!
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try all the different food stands (an excuse to go back, right?) the one that I did get to try was so good! I was really interested in trying out the Rock Lobster Spiced Sailor from HotBunzz, and I was not disappointed. It was a unique experience being able to try their food in the ROM’s setting. I wanted to try out as much of their menu as I could so I opted for the #FNLROMBO combo, which included any three bunzz for the price of two ROM bucks. That being said, I tried out the Rock Lobster Spiced Sailor as well as their Brazilian BBQ Beef. It was so delicious and unfortunately my photos of them do not do them any justice! (Mostly because I was way too excited to eat it.) Since I didn’t get to try out all the food stands I wanted to, I’m making it a point that next time I do!
FNL was certainly a new way to experience the ROM. A moment that really stood out to me was old school hip hop playing while I was sipping on some red wine at the dinosaur exhibit. That was a moment in time that I just had to capture.
So if you’re looking for a night out that combines, music, food and drinks, and maybe a bit of dinosaurs or mummies, FNL is the place you should check out. The event runs every Friday until December 6, so there’s enough time to check it out at least once. As for me, I’ll probably go again because I had an amazing time during my night at the museum and um, did I mention dinosaurs, dancing, and wine? Yeah, a recipe for Friday night fun.
